Residents of the Maple Heights apartment building started noticing the orange cat in early spring.
Every evening, just after sunset, it entered through the main entrance before the automatic doors closed.
It ignored every hallway.
Every stairwell.
Every floor.
It always climbed to the fourth floor and stopped outside Apartment 407.
The apartment had been empty for more than three years.
The previous tenant had moved away without leaving a forwarding address.
At least, that’s what everyone believed.
The cat never scratched the door.
Never meowed.
It simply sat there for about twenty minutes.

One evening, a resident tried carrying the cat downstairs.
The moment he released it, the animal sprinted back to Apartment 407.

The building manager finally unlocked the apartment.
Inside, the rooms were almost empty.
Dust covered every surface.
There was no food.

Nothing that would attract a cat.

The picture showed a smiling woman standing in front of Apartment 407.
At her feet sat the same orange cat.

The cat’s markings matched perfectly.
A local veterinarian reviewed the image.
He quietly pointed out something impossible.
An ordinary cat could never be the same age after nearly three decades.
Building records later revealed that the woman in the photograph had volunteered at a nearby animal shelter.
Her favorite rescue had been an orange stray that disappeared shortly before she moved away.
No one could explain why a cat with identical markings still returned to the same apartment every night.
