Sam Elliott has one of the most recognizable voices in Hollywood — that deep, slow drawl that has narrated everything from The Big Lebowski to countless Westerns. But when it came to the woman he would spend the rest of his life with, he was speechless for an entire decade.
She Was the Leading Lady. He Was a “Shadow on the Wall.”
Katharine Ross became a Hollywood icon almost overnight after starring as Elaine in The Graduate alongside Dustin Hoffman in 1967. Two years later, on the set of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, a young actor named Sam Elliott was captivated by her.
But there was a problem. She was the leading lady. He was a background extra.
“My wife, Katharine Ross, and I both worked on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but I didn’t dare try to talk to her then,” Elliott told AARP The Magazine. “She was the leading lady. I was a shadow on the wall, a glorified extra in a bar scene.”
By then, Katharine had already been married and divorced twice. She would go on to marry two more times before she and Sam crossed paths again — a full decade later.
“A Dark Corner”
But that first film wasn’t a total loss. Elliott used it as an education.
“It was a great opportunity, though, because being an extra on the show… allowed me to get in and watch ’em make the film,” he told The Oklahoman. “I spent a lot of time over in a dark corner watching Katharine and the rest of ’em work.”
For ten years, that was all he did. Watched. Waited. Never said a word.
The Second Chance
In 1978, the two were finally reunited on the set of the horror film The Legacy. This time, Elliott wasn’t lurking in a corner. This time, he had a career, a name, and — most importantly — the nerve.
Something clicked.
Sam was so taken with Katharine that he flew all the way to London for the film’s premiere purely because, as he put it, he was “smitten.”
Katharine later recalled the moment things shifted.
“Probably all that and more,” she told The Mercury News. “We were working together and one thing led to another. And here we are.”
The Wedding — and the Baby
Sam and Katharine married in 1984. Just months later, they welcomed their daughter, Cleo.
It was a whirlwind — but it was also the beginning of something remarkably durable in a town that rarely rewards longevity.
“It Takes Wanting to Be Married”
More than 40 years later, Sam and Katharine are still together. And according to Sam, the secret isn’t complicated.
“I think really what it boils down to is we love each other, and we work at it,” he explained. “And I think more importantly than anything, it takes wanting to be married.”
That’s the part people often overlook. Love isn’t enough on its own. Marriage is a choice — and it’s a choice you have to keep making.
From Extra to Leading Man
What makes their story so striking is how it mirrors the arc of Elliott’s own career. For years, he was the guy in the background. He didn’t become a household name until he was in his 40s. He didn’t get his first Emmy nomination until he was 55. He didn’t get his first Oscar nomination until he was 73.
