76-Year-Old Susan Sarandon Was Criticized for Her Clothing Her Response to the Haters Was Absolutely Perfect

Susan Sarandon has never been the type to stay quiet. Over a career spanning more than five decades, she has built a reputation not just as an Oscar-winning actress, but as someone who refuses to apologize for who she is. So when critics came for her wardrobe, she didn’t bother explaining herself. She just posted a picture.

The Outfit That Started It All

The controversy erupted during a red carpet event when Sarandon appeared wearing a white jacket with a black bra visible underneath. It was bold, confident, and entirely her own style. Some people loved it. Others were less kind.

One journalist went as far as to call her outfit “totally inappropriate.” The criticism echoed a familiar double standard: younger stars baring similar looks at the same events faced no such scrutiny. But Sarandon, then 76, was singled out — not for what she wore, but for wearing it at her age.

Her Response: One Photo, Zero Words

Instead of issuing a statement, writing a lengthy defense, or engaging in a back-and-forth with her critics, Sarandon did something far more effective. She went on social media and posted an old photograph of herself — wearing nothing but her underwear, proudly displaying her figure.

The message was unmistakable: She has always been comfortable in her own skin. She is still comfortable in her own skin. And no one else gets to decide what is “appropriate” for her body.

It was a picture worth a thousand words — and it silenced the critics without a single argument.

She’s Been Here Before

This wasn’t the first time Sarandon had faced criticism for her clothing choices. Back in 2016, she wore a black bra under a white blazer to the Screen Actors Guild Awards — during a segment honoring actors who had died that year. Critics, including TV host Piers Morgan, called the look “tacky” and “inappropriate” for the occasion. Morgan even asked whether she would wear the same outfit to a funeral.

Sarandon’s response? She tweeted a throwback photo of herself in a bra from the 1975 cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, dedicating it directly to Morgan: “Today’s #TBT is dedicated to @piersmorgan.”

The tweet sparked the #FreeTheCleavage movement, with women across social media posting their own photos in solidarity. As one person wrote: “I’m tired of being told I have too much cleavage, like it’s an option.” Another added: “Dedicated to @SusanSarandon and remember that we are in 2016 and women can dress as you see fit.”

What She Says About Aging

Sarandon has never been interested in hiding from the aging process. She has spoken about it with a clarity that many find refreshing — and even inspiring.

“When your sense of time has an ending and isn’t finite, like how it feels when you’re young,” she said. “When you have an understanding that time is precious — you have a tendency not to waste energy on the small stuff and only to surround yourself with people who are vital, curious, brave, and adventurous.”

As for her advice on aging gracefully? It’s simple.

“If you want to age gracefully, probably laugh a lot, and get the normal amount of exercise, and eat well and stay out of the sun would be the main things,” she said. She also credited having an amazing makeup and hair team for helping her look her best.

A Role Model for Anyone Told They’re “Too Old”

Susan Sarandon has built a career on playing complicated, powerful women. But perhaps her most powerful statement has been the one she makes simply by living her life on her own terms. She wears what she wants. She says what she thinks. And she refuses to let anyone tell her what a 76-year-old woman is supposed to look like.

Her response to the haters wasn’t angry. It was confident. And that’s exactly why it worked.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Sarandon let hers speak. 💪❤️
