Linda Melson Harrison, born July 26, 1945 in Berlin, Maryland, is best remembered as Nova.
The Most Beautiful Girl in a Post-Apocalyptic World
In 1966, Linda was a young actress and former Miss Maryland. At 21, she was cast in the role that would define her life: Nova in Planet of the Apes (1968) alongside Charlton Heston.
As Nova, a mute primitive human in a world ruled by apes, she had to act entirely with her eyes, her body, and her heart. And she did. Audiences fell in love with her instantly. The film became one of the biggest hits of 1968 and is now considered one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made.
She returned as Nova in the sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) and had a cameo in Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes (2001) remake – a beautiful full-circle moment 33 years later.
She also appeared in TV’s Batman in the 60s, just like Julie Newmar.
The Hollywood Marriage
During filming, Linda caught the eye of one of the most powerful men in Hollywood – Richard D. Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox and producer of Planet of the Apes. He was the son of legendary mogul Darryl F. Zanuck.
They began dating and married in 1969. For a time, she was Hollywood royalty – the wife of the studio boss.
They divorced in 1978, and Linda made a choice almost no actress made back then: She retired from acting for family reasons to raise her two sons.
After decades away, she returned in 2018 to co-star in Midnight Massacre, a modern-day version of Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar.
