He Checked Himself Into a Hospital in 1972 and It’s the Reason He’s Still Here 50 Years Later

Dick Van Dyke has just celebrated his 100th birthday — and fans everywhere want to know his secret. As it turns out, the answer isn’t complicated at all.

The beloved star of Mary Poppins, The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has spent more than seven decades in entertainment. He’s danced with penguins, charmed generations of children, and become one of the last living icons of Hollywood’s golden age. But behind the joy he brought to millions, Van Dyke was quietly fighting a battle with addiction that could have ended everything far too soon.

“I Had an Addictive Personality”

Van Dyke has been remarkably candid about his vices over the years. He smoked heavily. He drank. And he admits he didn’t recognize the pattern until much later in life.

“I smoked a lot, actually! I think I was probably in my 50s before it dawned on me that I had an addictive personality,” he shared, according to Unilad.

He explained that his personality made moderation nearly impossible.

“If I liked something, I was going to overdo it,” he said. “So I got rid of booze and cigarettes and all that stuff, which is probably why I’m still here.”

The Decision That Changed Everything

In 1972 — at a point when his drinking had spiraled out of control — Van Dyke checked himself into a hospital for alcoholism. He got sober. It was a turning point that likely saved his life.

But he has also been honest about the fact that quitting smoking was, in some ways, even harder than giving up alcohol.

“It was much worse than the alcohol,” he revealed.

The Trait He Credits Most

Van Dyke says staying away from alcohol and cigarettes isn’t the whole story, though. There’s one other quality he credits entirely — and it has nothing to do with diet or exercise.

“I’ve always thought that anger is one thing that eats up a person’s insides — and hate,” he shared. “And I never really was able to work up a feeling of hate. I think that is one of the chief things that kept me going.”

It’s a remarkably simple philosophy from a man who has lived an extraordinarily long life. No cigarettes. No alcohol. And, apparently, no room for hate.

Still Dancing at 100

Van Dyke’s milestone birthday has been celebrated around the world, with fans and fellow celebrities flooding social media with tributes. He has remained active, cheerful, and seemingly unstoppable — still dancing, still joking, and still charming everyone he meets.

At a time when most people would be slowing down, Van Dyke is doing the opposite. And he credits it all to a decision he made more than 50 years ago, and a mindset he’s carried his entire life.

Sometimes the simplest advice really is the best advice. 🎉

Happy 100th birthday, Dick Van Dyke. 🎂
