For nearly three decades, Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin have built a life together. But looking back, the Rocky star says there’s one thing he wishes he had done differently — and it isn’t what you might expect.
“I Wish I’d Married My Wife About Eight Years Earlier”
Stallone recently opened up about his marriage during a conversation with Tracy Smith for CBS Sunday Morning at New York’s 92NY. Asked what he would do over if he could change one thing in his life, the 80-year-old actor immediately thought of his wife.
“I wish I’d married my wife about eight years earlier,” Stallone admitted.
He and Flavin first met at a restaurant in 1988, but they didn’t walk down the aisle until 1997. Looking back now, Stallone believes he waited far too long.
“I was like such an idiot, procrastinating,” he said, explaining that he was still learning how relationships worked.
He also suggested that his difficult childhood may have influenced the way he approached love and relationships as an adult.
“She Has Kept Me Alive”
For Stallone, however, Flavin ultimately became the person who helped him understand love in a way he hadn’t before.
“She’s just magnificent; she has kept me alive,” he said. “And it took me so long to turn my head around and go, ‘Oh, you have the greatest gift in the world right here, and you’re looking out there, you fool!'”
It’s a remarkably candid admission from a man who has spent his career playing characters defined by their toughness. But Stallone has never pretended to have it all figured out — and that honesty is part of what makes the confession land.
The Rough Patch That Almost Ended It
The couple’s relationship has certainly had its difficult moments. In 2022, Flavin filed for divorce after 25 years of marriage. But the pair reconciled just one month later.
Since then, Stallone has spoken openly about the importance of putting his family ahead of his career. He has acknowledged that the drive that built his career also made him miss things he should have been present for — and that he’s trying to correct that now.
29 Years and Counting
Today, they are still together and celebrated their 29th wedding anniversary in May 2026. The couple share three daughters — Sophia, Sistine, and Scarlet.
Looking back, Stallone says he wishes he had figured it all out a little sooner.
And honestly, who hasn’t looked back at some point and wished they had appreciated something — or someone — a little more while they had the chance?
