For years, fans of Smallville and X‑Men were absolutely convinced they were watching the same actor play both Jimmy Olsen and Iceman. But here’s the twist: they weren’t.
Meet Aaron and Shawn Ashmore — identical twins who have been confusing audiences for decades.
Born to Be On Screen
Born in 1979 in Richmond, British Columbia, the Ashmore twins started their careers young after a talent agent approached their mother. From there, they landed commercial work — and quickly discovered that being identical had its perks… and its complications.
According to Shawn, casting directors sometimes couldn’t decide which twin to choose for a role. So they’d settle it with a coin toss — right in front of both boys. “They liked us both equally, so to keep things fair (and avoid hurt feelings), a coin flip seemed the fairest,” Shawn recalled.
Two Brothers, Two Iconic Roles
Despite the somewhat brutal method of dividing roles as kids, both brothers went on to build impressive, separate careers.
Shawn Ashmore became best known for playing Iceman in the X‑Men films, alongside roles in The Rookie and The Following.
Aaron Ashmore played Jimmy Olsen in Smallville, plus roles in Warehouse 13 and Killjoys.
Since both leaned heavily into sci‑fi, superhero, and genre television, it’s easy to see why fans blurred the two together over the years. They looked identical, played similar types of characters, and often appeared in the same kinds of shows. Who could blame anyone for getting confused?
Even Today, the Confusion Lives On
The mix‑ups haven’t stopped. When Aaron appeared in a recent season of Ginny & Georgia, plenty of fans of The Rookie assumed they were watching Shawn.
One Reddit user wrote: “This whole time I thought I was watching Shawn Ashmore from The Rookie!”
Another admitted: “I literally just found out that Gil (Aaron) has a twin. I thought he was on The Rookie and Ginny & Georgia.”
A third chimed in: “I knew there were twins but I always thought The Rookie guy was Gil omg.”
