Christina Applegate wasn’t just on TV – she WAS TV.
Born in Hollywood, Literally
Born November 25, 1971, in Los Angeles, California, Christina was destined for the screen. Daughter of record producer Robert Applegate and singer-actress Nancy Priddy, she started acting at just 7 months old on Days of Our Lives.
But her life changed forever at 15.
Kelly Bundy – The Role That Made Her Famous
In 1987, Fox launched a risky new sitcom called Married… with Children. Christina was cast as Kelly Bundy, the beautiful, hilarious, and famously not-so-bright daughter of Al and Peggy Bundy.
The show ran for 11 seasons (1987-1997) and made her one of the most famous teenagers in America. She was the ultimate 90s crush – but she was also a brilliant comedic actress, holding her own against veterans Ed O’Neill and Katey Sagal.
While still on the show, she was already trying to break out, starring in films like Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991).
Life After Kelly – Proving Everyone Wrong
Many child stars fade. Christina exploded.
1. The Big Hit (1998) & The Sweetest Thing (2002): She became a movie comedy queen.
2. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004 & 2013): As Veronica Corningstone opposite Will Ferrell, she stole the entire movie. “I’m Veronica Corningstone” is still quoted today.
3. Emmy Winner for Friends: She won a Primetime Emmy Award for her guest role as Amy Green, Rachel’s sister, on Friends.
4. Samantha Who? (2007-2009): She earned a Golden Globe nomination and proved she could carry her own network show.
5. Dead to Me (2019-2022): Her darkest, best role. As Jen Harding opposite Linda Cardellini on Netflix, she earned another Emmy nomination and showed incredible dramatic depth. She filmed the final season while battling MS.
She also earned a Tony Award nomination for her dancing on Broadway and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Warrior
In 2008, Christina was diagnosed with breast cancer at 36 and underwent a double mastectomy. She founded the charity Right Action for Women.
In 2021, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Instead of hiding, she spoke openly about it, finished Dead to Me, and gave one of the most emotional standing ovations in Emmy history in 2023 when she walked on stage with a cane.
At 53, she is a mother, a fighter, and more loved than ever.
Final Thought: She started as a joke – the dumb blonde daughter. She ended up being the strongest woman in the room.
