The Bourgeois Girl Who Shocked France

Et Dieu… créa la femme (1956) was not her first film, but it was the one that launched her into the stratosphere.

Bardot played Juliette, an 18-year-old orphan in St. Tropez whose appetite for freedom and pleasure shocked all of St. Tropez. She danced barefoot on tables. She broke every taboo about nudity that existed in 1950s cinema.

The film was a scandal. The Vatican condemned it. America banned it in some places. And that only made it the biggest foreign film ever released in the US at that time.

Overnight, Bardot became the embodiment of liberated femininity. The term “sex kitten” was literally coined for her.

At the height of a career that spanned 28 films, she came to symbolize a nation bursting out of bourgeois respectability. France in the 60s was Brigitte Bardot.
