From Philadelphia Society to Hollywood Icon
Born Grace Patricia Kelly on November 12, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, she came from a prominent, wealthy family. She graduated from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 1949 and began acting in New York theater and live TV dramas.
Her film debut was in 1951’s Fourteen Hours, but she exploded in 1952 with High Noon opposite Gary Cooper.
Despite a career of only 6 years (1950-1956), she is considered an icon of the Golden Age of Hollywood. She starred in only 11 motion pictures, but almost all are classics.
Hitchcock’s Favorite Blonde
Legendary director Alfred Hitchcock was obsessed with her cool, stately beauty and reserve. He called her his perfect blonde and cast her in three masterpieces back-to-back:
1. Dial M for Murder (1954) – as a wife marked for murder
2. Rear Window (1954) – opposite James Stewart, the ultimate Hitchcock thriller
3. To Catch a Thief (1955) – with Cary Grant on the French Riviera – ironically, where she would meet her future prince.
But her greatest achievement was not with Hitchcock.
Mogambo (1953) won her a Golden Globe and her first Academy Award nomination.
The Country Girl (1954) – playing opposite Bing Crosby as a worn-down wife, without makeup or glamour, she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1954, beating Judy Garland. It proved she was not just beauty – she was talent.
The Wedding of the Century
At the height of her fame, at age 26, Grace Kelly did the unthinkable.
In April 1956, she retired from acting completely to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco to become Princess Consort of Monaco, styled as Her Serene Highness The Princess of Monaco, commonly known as Princess Grace.
The wedding was one of the most thoroughly covered news events of the 1950s. Over 30 million people watched it on TV. MGM designed her wedding dress – still the most famous wedding dress in history.
She traded Hollywood for royalty, and devoted her life to philanthropy. The Princess Grace Foundation, founded by her son, still helps artists today.
The Tragic End
On September 14, 1982, Princess Grace was driving with her daughter Princess Stéphanie on a winding mountain road in Monaco when she suffered a stroke and crashed. She died the next day at age 52.
Her death shocked the world – the fairy tale princess gone too soon.
