Johnny Depp Sets One Condition for His Pirates of the Caribbean Return — and Fans Are Losing It

After years of rumors, Johnny Depp has finally said the words Pirates of the Caribbean fans have been waiting to hear — sort of. Speaking on his press tour for his new holiday film Ebenezer, the actor addressed whether he would ever pick up Captain Jack Sparrow's compass again.

His answer was not a flat yes, and it was not a no either. It was one very specific condition — and it tells you everything about how Depp feels about the franchise that made him a global icon.

Asked by Entertainment Tonight whether he would return for a sixth Pirates film, Depp kept it simple. If things are exactly where they need to be with regard to how the franchise gets topped off, he said, then the only involvement he truly wants is to send the character off on a better note.

That phrase — send them off on a better note — is doing a lot of work. Depp last played Jack Sparrow in 2017's Dead Men Tell No Tales, and his split from Disney after that film was messy and very public. A return, in his telling, would not be about restarting the franchise. It would be about closing it properly.

There is one person who could get Depp back on set tomorrow: longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Depp made that part crystal clear, saying he would go to work with Bruckheimer tomorrow for anything, adding that if it is Jerry, he trusts him, and that they share a deep friendship.

That trust matters because Bruckheimer has been the loudest voice pushing for Depp's return. At Disney's D23 fan event in August 2026, he confirmed that Disney is in talks with Depp for the sixth film and that a screenplay is in progress, with writer Jeff Nathanson working on the script.

Here is where fans need to pump the brakes. As of now, there is no official announcement of Pirates of the Caribbean 6, no signed deal, and no release date. Depp has not confirmed he will appear in the film — he has confirmed the terms under which he would.

What is real: the five-film saga grossed $4.5 billion worldwide between 2003 and 2017, Bruckheimer is actively developing a sixth script, and Depp is publicly willing to talk. That is a long way from a done deal, but it is also the closest the franchise has come to a reunion in years.

Depp's own framing suggests that if he does return, it could be his last time in the role — a farewell rather than a reboot. Other familiar faces are reportedly open to returning too, with Orlando Bloom and Geoffrey Rush said to be willing if conditions are met, while Keira Knightley is unlikely to come back.

For now, the ball is in Disney's court. If the script gives Jack Sparrow the ending Depp wants, the captain could sail one last time. If it does not, fans may have already seen the last of him — and Depp seems at peace with either outcome.
