The gym was called Iron & Steam, a 24-hour facility in the basement of a Midtown tower with a locker room that smelled like chlorine, sweat, and secrets. I’d been training there for six months — mostly with Sloane, who’d been assigned as my personal trainer after I’d complained about “not seeing results.”
Sloane was thirty. A powerlifter turned trainer with shoulders that looked carved from stone and a habit of following me into the locker room after sessions to “discuss my progress.” She wore black sports bras that showed her abs and leggings that left nothing to the imagination. And she had a way of looking at me while I showered — through the frosted glass, through the steam — like I was a set she intended to push to failure.
Tonight was leg day. I’d finished at 10:45 PM. The gym was emptying. I’d showered. I’d wrapped myself in a towel. I’d sat on the bench to dry my hair. And Sloane had walked in — still in her training clothes, still sweating, still completely focused.
“The locker room is empty,” I whispered, sitting on the wooden bench in my white towel, my hair dripping onto my shoulders, the steam from the showers turning the mirrors into silver pools. Sloane was standing in front of me, her hand on my knee, her face inches from my neck. “The showers are still running. The gym closed at eleven. The front desk has gone home. And your hand is on my towel, not the locker. You’re supposed to be giving me post-workout stretches. Not touching me. Not sliding your fingers under the edge of my towel. Not—”
Sloane didn’t speak. She just leaned in, her cheek brushing my wet temple, her hand sliding from my knee to my thigh, then under the edge of my towel, finding me bare and ready and completely unwrapped.
“If the night cleaner comes in,” I breathed, my voice trembling as the steam swirled around us, “he’ll see my trainer with her hands inside my towel. He’ll see your sports bra pushed up and your mouth on my neck and the steam hiding everything except the sounds — the bench creaking, my breathing, the shower still running — and he’ll know that this isn’t a cool-down. This isn’t recovery. This is—”
She turned my face toward her with a hand on my jaw. Her mouth found mine. A kiss that tasted like chlorine and sweat and the exact moment when a shower becomes something that can’t be washed off no matter how long you stand under the water. Her tongue slid against mine, her hand sliding deeper inside my towel, her thumb finding my clit with a precision that was completely devastating.
The locker room door opened.
A mop bucket. A radio playing classic rock. The night cleaner — Carlos, fifty, completely invisible, completely unaware — starting his rounds.
“Anyone still here?” he called out, his voice echoing off the tile. “Closing up the wet areas!”
Sloane didn’t pull away. She just pressed her other hand against the locker beside my head — holding the door, holding me steady, her fingers still moving inside me.
“Just finishing a stretch, Carlos!” Sloane called out, her voice perfectly steady, completely at odds with the fingers that were currently curling inside me. “Give us five minutes!”
“Okay! But I’m mopping in ten!”
Sloane looked at me. The steam was turning her face into something wild and beautiful.
“Your flexibility is impressive,” she whispered against my mouth, her thumb circling my clit, her fingers pressing deeper, finding a rhythm that matched the dripping of the showers. “But I’m about to test your limits. So hold the towel. Hold the bench. And let the steam hide exactly what your trainer does to you when no one is watching.”
She made me come on the locker room bench. Her fingers inside me, her mouth on my breast, the towel falling away, the steam turning everything into a dream. I came with her hand over my mouth, my cry swallowed by the tile acoustics, my body shaking so hard the bench rattled against the floor.
After, she helped me up. She handed me a fresh towel. She kissed my forehead.
“Same time Friday?” she asked.
I nodded. I couldn’t speak.
I still train at Iron & Steam. Sloane is still my trainer. And every Friday at 11:15 PM, when the gym is empty and the showers are running, she meets me on the bench and shows me exactly what “post-workout recovery” means. She says my flexibility has improved. She says my “range of motion” is “off the charts.”
She’s right. It is. And the only thing more flexible than my body is my willingness to stay late — every night, on the bench, with the steam rising and her hands inside my towel.
