Twenty-three years. That’s how long fans waited to see Madonna perform at the MTV Video Music Awards again — and on Sunday night, the Queen of Pop made the wait worth every second.
Sunday’s 2026 VMAs, hosted by Snoop Dogg, opened with an eight-minute spectacle that instantly became one of the most talked-about moments in the show’s history. Madonna, 68, didn’t just show up. She took over.
The Return 23 Years in the Making
Madonna was first announced as the 2026 VMAs opener on September 16, and the news alone sent fans into a frenzy. Her last performance was back in 2003 — the now-legendary onstage kisses with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. This time, she opened with a fog-infused dance sequence built around the spoken word intro from “One Step Away,” from Confessions II — The Film.
And yes, fans noticed the boots: lace-up Saint Laurent boots from her original Confessions on a Dance Floor era — a deliberate callback to 2005.
The performance arrives on a wave of momentum. In July, Madonna released Confessions II, the long-awaited sequel to her 2005 hit album, and it debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 134,000 units moved in its first week — roughly 40,000 more than her 2019 album Madame X.
A Piano, a Duet, and Sabrina Carpenter
Just when the crowd thought they had seen everything, Sabrina Carpenter appeared for a surprise duet. Carpenter opened at the piano while Madonna sat atop the instrument, and together they performed their song “Bring Your Love.”
Carpenter’s outfit channeled Madonna’s early 1980s style: black glittery shorts, a white button-down, a black beret, and suspenders. The pairing was electric.
The duet isn’t a one-off moment, either. “Bring Your Love” is nominated for Song of the Year — one of 11 nominations Madonna carries into the night, including Artist of the Year and Video of the Year for Confessions II – The Film. With 19 VMA wins already under her belt, she’s adding to a legacy that stretches back to the very first ceremony in 1984, when she performed “Like a Virgin” at the inaugural show.
Charli XCX, Julia Garner, and a Bathroom Full of Surprises
The cameos kept coming. Charli XCX burst out of a bathroom stall to join Madonna for their collaboration “Danceteria Afterhours,” which had dropped just two days earlier on Friday, September 24. Charli, 34, emerged in a black minidress and fishnets with her signature dark shades, performing on a set designed to look like a club bathroom.
“Madonna is the one who paved the way for us all,” Charli wrote on Instagram Stories. “To work with you on this song, to step into your world, your process, your detail: it was all just brilliant.”
But the surprise appearances didn’t stop there. Julia Garner — the actress cast to play Madonna in her long-delayed biopic — popped in and out of a collection of larger-than-life bathroom stalls alongside Seth Rogen, Sombr, longtime friend Debi Mazar (who’s name-checked in the “Danceteria” lyrics), and producer Andrew Watt in a Keith Haring-inspired outfit.
The Biopic Clue Everyone Missed
Here’s the detail fans can’t stop dissecting: Julia Garner’s appearance was her most public moment with Madonna in months, and it comes just weeks after Garner told ELLE (in a feature published September 8) that she’s still holding out hope the Madonna biopic gets made. “I think the movie has to get made. But we’ll see,” she said.
The film has been stuck in development limbo since Universal Pictures pulled the plug in 2023 — Madonna was set to direct, but later said telling her story her way required a bigger budget than the studio would allow. “I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget.”
Madonna and Garner have stayed close, collaborating on the Confessions II short film and the “Bring Your Love” music video. So was Sunday’s reunion just a fun cameo — or a sign the biopic is quietly back on track? Madonna isn’t saying. But one thing is clear: the Queen of Pop isn’t done making history.
