The dress was pale blue

It was a Saturday afternoon, and the boutique was busy. Women with expensive handbags browsed racks of silk and lace while soft jazz played from hidden speakers. I was supposed to be helping my friend Elena find an outfit for a wedding. Instead, I was watching her try on lingerie in a dressing room that suddenly felt too small.

She stepped out of the stall to show me the dress. It was delicate lace, barely-there fabric that left absolutely nothing to imagination. I could see every curve. The dark outline of her nipples. The shadow between her legs. She looked at me through the mirror, her eyes wide and questioning.

“Too much?” she asked.

“Not enough,” I heard myself say.

I don’t know what came over me. Maybe it was the way she was standing there, vulnerable and exposed, asking for my opinion like she didn’t know she was destroying me. Maybe it was the three months of tension that had been building between us—every lingering glance, every “accidental” touch, every night I’d gone home and touched myself thinking about her.

I stepped into the dressing room with her. Closed the door. And locked it.

She looked at me, shocked. “What are you doing?”

I didn’t answer. I dropped to my knees.

Right there, on the thin carpet of the boutique dressing room, while shoppers walked by outside and a sales associate asked someone if they needed help with sizes. I was on my knees in front of Elena, looking up at her face, watching her process what was happening.

She didn’t stop me. She didn’t push me away. She bit her lip—hard—and nodded. Just a tiny, desperate nod. But it was permission. It was yes.

I hooked my fingers in her underwear and pulled it to the side. She was already wet. I could smell her—sweet, musky, intoxicating. I looked up, made eye contact, and she was staring down at me with wide, disbelieving eyes, like she couldn’t believe I was doing this in public, like she’d been dreaming about it for months.

I leaned in and used my tongue.

She tasted like everything I’d been fantasizing about and nothing like I’d imagined. Better. Realer. I licked her slowly at first, teasing, because I wanted to hear her try to stay quiet. I wanted to feel her struggle. Her hands flew to my hair, gripping hard, pulling me closer, guiding me exactly where she needed me.

I could hear footsteps outside the door. A sales associate’s voice, asking if we needed another size. I didn’t stop. I sucked her clit and slid two fingers inside her, curling them up, pressing against that spot that made her legs shake. She came so hard she had to stuff her own fist in her mouth to stay quiet, her body shuddering, her knees buckling, her grip on my hair pulling hard enough to bring tears to my eyes.

After, she was shaking. I stood up, my knees sore from the carpet, and kissed her. She could taste herself on my lips—she told me later that was the moment she knew she’d never forget this. I helped her get dressed, my hands trembling as I zipped her back into the lace.

We bought the dress. Three hundred dollars. She handed me her credit card like she was in a trance, and I paid while she stood beside me, flushed and glowing and unable to meet the sales associate’s eyes.

She hung it in her closet when we got home. She never wore it. Not once.

She told me later that every time she saw it, she got wet remembering my mouth on her in that tiny room with strangers walking by. Every time she touched the fabric, she remembered my tongue, my fingers, the way I’d claimed her in public without a single word.

I still see that dress sometimes, hanging in her closet, pale blue and innocent-looking. And I still remember exactly what it cost.

Not three hundred dollars.

It cost me every wall I’d ever built. And it was worth every penny.
