She was Miss Moneypenny in Casino Royale, a Kelinda in Star Trek, and the most wanted woman in Italian cinema of the 1970s.
Her real name is Bärbel Gutscher, but the world knows her as Barbara Bouchet.
From Refugee Camp to Hollywood
Born on August 15, 1943, in Reichenberg, Sudetenland (now Liberec, Czech Republic) in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia, her childhood was not glamorous. After WWII, her family was placed in a resettlement camp in Germany, then emigrated to the United States under the Displaced Persons Act of 1948.
They settled in San Francisco. Young Bärbel got a job as a dancer on KPIX-TV’s Dance Party show. She started modeling for magazine covers and TV commercials, and soon Hollywood called.
Her first roles were small: What a Way to Go! (1964), John Goldfarb, Please Come Home (1964) and In Harm’s Way (1964) where she played the scandalous Liz Eddington.
She posed for Playboy twice – May 1965 and February 1967 as one of “The Girls of Casino Royale” – and became famous.

Casino Royale (1967) – She played Miss Moneypenny in the original James Bond spoof, alongside David Niven, Peter Sellers and Ursula Andress.
Star Trek (1968) – In the classic episode “By Any Other Name” she played Kelinda, the alien who seduces Spock. Trekkies still worship her.
Sweet Charity (1969) – As Ursula in the Bob Fosse musical with Shirley MacLaine.
The Queen of Italian Genre Cinema
In the 1970s, Barbara did what many American starlets did – she moved to Italy, became an Italian citizen, and became a superstar.
She starred in over 80 films, mostly in the famous Italian genres:
Giallo (Italian thrillers): Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972) with Lucio Fulci, The Red Queen Kills Seven Times (1972), Black Belly of the Tarantula (1971)
Poliziotteschi (Italian crime films): Caliber 9 (1972), Cry of a Prostitute
She was regarded as the ultimate sex symbol of 60s and 70s genre films – blonde, curvaceous, and with perfect comic timing.
In 1974 she married producer Luigi Borghese and had two sons, including celebrity chef Alessandro Borghese, now one of Italy’s most famous chefs.
From Actress to Fitness Queen
In 1982 she effectively retired from acting and invented a new career – fitness. In the mid-80s she opened a fitness studio in Rome and produced fitness videos and books – one of the first celebrities to do so in Italy.
She came back for special roles: with Gregory Peck in The Scarlet and The Black (1983), and a small role in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York (2002) as Mrs. Schermerhorn.
Her most recent appearance was as Countess Wiendemar in Diabolik: Who Are You? (2023) at age 80. She is still active after 65 years in show business!
