From Top Model to Movie Star

Originally a top teen model, Phoebe was discovered at a party at Studio 54 – the most famous nightclub in the world. At just 18, she made her film debut in 1982. And she didn’t make one iconic film that year – she made two.

Paradise (1982): Her very first film as Sarah, a role that made her famous for her natural beauty and innocence.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982): In the same year, she played Linda Barrett, the experienced best friend to Jennifer Jason Leigh. That slow-motion scene coming out of the pool in a red bikini is still ranked as one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history. Director Amy Heckerling’s film became a cult classic.

She was only 19 and already the biggest teen star in America.

Private School (1983), Lace (1984), Drop Dead Fred (1991), Princess Caraboo (1994): She was the go-to girl for charming, beautiful, and slightly rebellious roles.

Everyone wanted her. She could have been the next big everything.

Why She Left

At the height of her fame, in 1989, she married Oscar-winning actor Kevin Kline (he is 16 years older). And then she did something almost no actress does.

She quit.

After Princess Caraboo in 1994, Phoebe quietly retired from acting to become a full-time mother to their two children. She said in her own words she wanted to raise her family.

She never announced it loudly. She just… disappeared. No scandal, no comeback attempts.

In 2005, she reinvented herself again – opening a boutique in New York called Blue Tree on Madison Avenue, which she still owns and runs today. It’s one of the most beloved boutiques in Manhattan.

She occasionally appears at Tony Awards with her husband, looking as beautiful as ever at 62, but she refuses to return to Hollywood.
