The Vault at Underground 4

The automated security system inside the subterranean central vault complex triggered at 01:15 AM. A high-voltage power surge, caused by an exterior transformer explosion, initiated an unexpected hard lockdown. The primary blast doors—massive six-ton reinforced steel barriers—slammed shut across all four basement levels, completely isolating Sub-Level 4 from the surface.

Trapped inside the vault’s secondary server corridor was Chief Security Officer David Vance. The sudden drop of the inner pneumatic security gate pinned his left arm against the wall frame, leaving him completely immobile. To make matters worse, the surge triggered the automated carbon-dioxide fire suppression system. Dense, white CO2 vapor began flooding the sealed corridor, rapidly lowering the oxygen levels inside the room while the temperature plunged.

Lying near the main terminal, her ears alert to every hiss of the gas pipes, was Maya—a sleek, five-year-old sable German Shepherd. Maya was a retired tactical bank-security K9, uniquely trained to recognize system alert codes and handle emergency manual releases.

David’s vision was blurring as his breathing grew heavy. He looked through the thick white fog at Maya, pointing his free hand toward the low-level emergency ventilation box near the floor.

“Maya! The red breaker handle!” David coughed, his voice echoing off the steel walls. “Under the panel… pull the safety lever down!”

Maya didn’t hesitate. She scrambled across the slick metal floor, ignoring the hiss of the expanding gas. Reaching the emergency box, she shoved her snout into the recessed opening, using her nose to pop open the magnetic outer panel.

Inside was a heavy rubberized emergency circuit lever. It required significant manual force to trip the secondary battery breaker. Maya clamped her powerful jaws onto the lever handle, braced her hind legs against the concrete base, and threw her entire body weight backward.

With a heavy mechanical CLACK, the circuit tripped. The automated gas valves shut off instantly, and the emergency air intake fans whirred to life, flushing the white vapor out through the ceiling vents.

However, the sudden electrical bypass triggered a secondary mechanical latch. Overhead, the heavy steel suspension beam holding the backup generator frame began to groan under tension, slowly unseating from its mounting…

When the SWAT breach team finally cut through the outer vault door forty minutes later, they found David sitting against the wall, breathing clean air, with Maya resting her head on his knee.

The breach commander stared at the tripped emergency breaker and whispered in shock: “This panel was sealed behind a magnetic lock… who pulled the secondary bypass?”

David smiled weakly, resting his hand on Maya’s head: “She opened the hatch and pulled the breaker herself.”
