Now, more than a week after her death, the superstar’s niece, Jada Star, is opening up about why her aunt made the difficult decision to keep her diagnosis private.
“She Never Wanted to Worry Anybody”
In an interview with Extra, Jada shared the simple but profound reason behind Dolly’s secrecy: she didn’t want to burden anyone.
“She never wanted to worry anybody,” Jada explained. “You know, we kind of kept all that stuff real private.”
Even though the family knew about Dolly’s health struggles, her death still came as a profound shock. “I can’t remember a life without her,” Jada said. “It’s also been really bittersweet because of this beautiful opportunity we’ve had to see how much the whole world loves her. So, all of these tributes have helped so much to help us all through it.”

But true to form, Dolly had already prepared her family for what came next — with a characteristically feisty sense of humor. Jada revealed that her aunt left them clear instructions on how to move forward without her.
“She would also tell us to start drying it up and start trying to get back to work,” Jada joked. “And to love each other real hard. Yeah, she was just a trip.”
