The Floor That Doesn’t Exist

Some destinations are not meant to be reached.

At 11:48 PM, Madison Reed stepped into the elevator of the Grand Harbor Hotel.

She was exhausted.

After a twelve-hour flight and an unexpected delay, all she wanted was a hot shower and a few hours of sleep.

Her room was on the twelfth floor.

She pressed the button marked 12.

The elevator doors closed.

Everything seemed normal.

Until the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every floor number disappeared.

Madison frowned and pressed the button again.

Nothing happened.

The elevator began moving upward.

Slowly at first.

Then faster.

Her stomach dropped as the elevator shook violently.

“Seriously?” she whispered.

She grabbed the handrail.

The digital display flashed.

Then something appeared that made her stop breathing.

0

Madison stared at the screen.

There was no floor zero in the hotel.

Before she could press another button, the elevator stopped.

A metallic groan echoed through the cabin.

Then the doors opened.

Madison expected a dark hallway.

Instead, she saw an ocean.

An enormous underwater city stretched beyond the elevator doors.

Buildings stood beneath deep blue water. Cars floated upside down. Streetlights glowed faintly in the distance. Strange jellyfish drifted between abandoned skyscrapers.

And somehow, the water wasn’t entering the elevator.

Madison stepped backward.

“What the hell…”

A small yellow school bus floated past the opening.

Its headlights were on.

Something was sitting inside.

A child.

The child’s face was pressed against the window.

Madison raised her phone and tried calling reception.

No signal.

Then the child slowly lifted one hand.

Not to wave.

To point behind her.

Madison turned.

At the far end of the elevator corridor, something enormous moved through the darkness.

A shadow.

It was getting closer.

She rushed toward the control panel and repeatedly pressed the close-door button.

Nothing.

The shadow suddenly accelerated.

A gigantic shark emerged from the darkness.

Its enormous jaws opened.

Madison screamed.

The elevator doors slammed shut just as the creature struck them.

The entire cabin shook.

The lights went out.

For a moment, there was silence.

Then came three slow knocks.

From outside.

Madison stood frozen.

Another three knocks.

This time, something dragged its nails across the elevator doors.

She backed into the corner.

Her phone suddenly lit up.

A notification appeared.

GRAND HARBOR HOTEL — ROOM 1208

She had received a message from the hotel’s front desk.

“Ms. Reed, we apologize for the inconvenience. Please remain inside the elevator. Your floor is being prepared.”

Madison’s fingers trembled.

She typed:

“WHAT IS FLOOR ZERO?”

The reply arrived instantly.

“Please do not open the doors.”

Before she could respond, the elevator began moving again.

The display showed 12.

Madison nearly cried with relief.

The elevator slowed.

A soft chime sounded.

The doors opened.

She stumbled into what looked like her hotel hallway.

Warm lights.

Carpeted floors.

Room numbers.

Everything was normal.

Except for one thing.

At the end of the hallway stood a man wearing a hotel uniform.

His face was hidden beneath a black shadow.

“Miss Reed?” he asked.

Madison nodded.

The man smiled.

“Your room is ready.”

She looked at the number on her key card.

Then she looked at the door beside the man.

Something was wrong.

Her room was supposed to be on the other side of the building.

She slowly raised her eyes.

The man was no longer smiling.

He was staring at her reflection in the polished elevator doors.

Madison turned around.

Her reflection remained inside the elevator.

And it was smiling.

The real Madison stepped backward.

The reflection lifted its hand.

Then it pressed its palm against the glass.

The elevator doors began closing.

Madison ran toward them.

“WAIT!”

But just before they shut, she saw something behind her reflection.

A gigantic human eye.

Watching her from the darkness of Floor Zero.

The doors closed.

The hallway lights went out.

And the hotel elevator disappeared.

The next morning, hotel security reviewed the footage.

At 11:48 PM, Madison entered the elevator.

She pressed the button for the twelfth floor.

The doors closed.

Nothing unusual happened.

The elevator traveled directly to floor twelve.

But when the doors opened, nobody came out.

The security guard rewound the footage.

He watched again.

And again.

Then he noticed something.

Just before the elevator doors closed, Madison had turned toward the security camera.

Her lips moved.

He zoomed in.

She was saying something.

Three words.

“Don’t let me out.”

The guard froze.

A moment later, the elevator doors opened again.

Empty.

But the digital display showed something impossible.

0

The guard immediately called the hotel manager.

Before he could explain what he had seen, the elevator phone rang.

The manager answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

“Please…”

He recognized it immediately.

It was Madison.

“Please don’t send anyone down here.”

The manager swallowed.

“Where are you?”

A long silence followed.

Then she whispered:

“I’m in the elevator.”

Another pause.

“But something else is wearing my face.”

The call ended.

The manager stared at the phone.

Then the elevator display changed.

Floor 12.

Floor 11.

Floor 10.

It was descending.

And somewhere deep beneath the hotel, something began knocking.

Three times.

THE END.
