The Italian Queen Who Invented Pop Music Before Madonna

If you grew up in Europe or Latin America in the 70s and 80s, there was only ONE queen on TV.

Her name was Raffaella. Just Raffaella.

Born Raffaella Maria Roberta Pelloni on June 18, 1943, in Bologna, Italy, she started as a child actress in the 1950s. She appeared in dozens of films in the 60s including Hollywood movies like Caesar the Conqueror (1962) and Von Ryan’s Express (1965) with Frank Sinatra.

But acting wasn’t enough for her.

In 1970, two things happened that changed her life: she released her first pop album Raffaella and she debuted as a TV variety show host. Italy had never seen anything like her – she could sing, dance, act, and host all at once.

The Songs That Conquered Two Continents

Between the 1970s and 1980s, Raffaella Carrà became a pioneer. At a time when women on Italian TV were supposed to be quiet, she danced, showed her belly button (which caused a national scandal in 1970!), and sang about female freedom.

Her hits became anthems across Italy, Spain, and Latin America:

Tuca Tuca (1971) – Banned by the Vatican for being too sexy, which only made it more famous.

Forte Forte Forte (1976) – Her signature album and song, a European smash.

A Far L’Amore Comincia Tu (1976) – Later remixed as a world hit in 2011 by Bob Sinclar.

Fiesta, Rumore, Tanti Auguri – Songs that are still played at every party in Spain and Italy today.

She sold millions of records and became the first world-famous pop star creating the kind of spectacle that Madonna, Lady Gaga, and Michael Jackson would later do. Many call her the original gay icon and feminist icon of European pop.

The Queen of Television

Raffaella was even bigger on TV than in music. She hosted legendary shows on RAI (Italy) and TVE (Spain) for over 40 years. She was the most famous Italian personality in the world for decades.

She passed away on July 5, 2021, in Rome at age 78 from lung cancer. When she died, all of Italy stopped. The Prime Minister gave a speech. Streets were named after her.

Raffaella Carrà taught women to dance, to be free, and to not apologize. She was joyful, colorful, and fearless when Italy was very conservative.

Final Thought: Before Madonna said “Express Yourself,” Raffaella Carrà was already doing it – with more glitter, more dance, and a much bigger smile.
