The Smart Home Lockout

David Vance was a remote software engineer living in a high-rise smart apartment complex on the 14th floor. On a rainy Tuesday evening, while stepping onto his private glass balcony to fix a loose drainage pipe, a sudden violent gust of wind slammed the heavy soundproof sliding glass door shut. The automated smart lock engaged instantly, locking David outside on the narrow ledge in freezing rain.

To make matters worse, David had left his phone, keys, and winter jacket on his desk inside. The balcony had zero shelter, the temperature was dropping rapidly, and because of the high-frequency storm noise, no one on the streets 14 floors below could hear his frantic knocking. Hypothermia was setting in, and he knew he couldn’t survive the night in soaking wet clothes.

Inside the living room, sitting on the rug, was Cooper—David’s three-year-old Golden Retriever. Cooper heard the muffled banging on the glass. He walked to the sliding door, pressing his nose against the damp pane, sensing David’s panic.

David began pointing frantically at the smart tablet mounted on the living room wall, 6 feet off the ground, which controlled the apartment’s doors and security systems.

Cooper had seen David use the tablet daily to play music or open doors, but the screen required a touch trigger. Understanding the urgency, Cooper didn’t just scratch at the door. He jumped onto the edge of the velvet sofa, stretched his front paws onto the wooden side table, and pressed his damp snout directly against the wall-mounted touchscreen.

The motion-activated screen lit up, bringing up the main dashboard. Cooper then placed his heavy paw onto the large green “UNLOCK” icon displayed on the low-level smart hub screen on the side table—a trick David had casually trained him to do for treats when bringing in groceries.

The electronic lock beeped, the blue LED ring turned green, and the heavy glass door clicked open. David slid into the warm living room, collapsing onto the carpet. Cooper immediately lay across David’s chest to share his body heat until David regained enough strength to call for help.
